Stretching across approximately 50 km, the A89 East section from Balbigny (Loire) – La Tour-de-Salvagny (Rhône) completes the A89 motorway between Bordeaux and the Rhône-Alpes region. It is the final section of the major east-west motorway network connecting the Atlantic Coast to the Lyon region.
The Balbigny – Violay section in the Loire department is 18 km long.
The main features of this section are as follows:
- earthworks: 5 million m3 of excavated earth (including 2 million m3 mined) and 3.8 million m3 of backfill,
- Bernand Viaduct (228 m) and Rey Viaduct (178 m): 2 composite dual-girder decks, 10.9 m wide,
- Gonon Viaduct (327 m): composite dual-girder and prestressed box girder, 13.4 m wide,
- Violay Tunnel (4 km, dual tube and specific project management),
- 19 small bridges: 9 overbridges and 10 underpasses (including a 100 m x 8 m vault under a 20 m embankment),
- motorway interchange + slip road to the RN82 road at Balginy,
- interchange tollgate,
- Néronde service area.
